Analytical Services

EARDC Analytical Laboratory Services

The Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center (EARDC) has been providing water analysis services since 1979. Samples are analyzed from wells, springs, rivers, municipalities, and wastewater treatment facilities for a variety of chemical and biological constituents. The EARDC laboratory has been certified by the Texas Department of Health to perform bacteriological testing of water. EARDC has provided a wide range of services for private citizens and numerous organizations including the Edwards Underground Water District, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Barton Springs Conservation District, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TP&W), Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), and Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC).

Laboratory Facilities

The laboratory is equipped with a Model 901 Orion Ion Analyzer, Perkin Elmer and Spectronic 20D Spectrophotometers, Pensky-Martin Closed Flash Point Tester, Turner Fluorometer, Fisher Titrimeter, Mettler Balances, Perkin Elmer Model 2380 and Model 305 Atomic Absorption spectrophotometers with a Flame and Graphite Furnace. EARDC has a 4110ZL Perkin Elmer Graphite Furnace for Trace Metal Analysis, Shimadzu 5050A Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, a Hewlett Packard 5890 GC/MS for volatile and semivolatile organic analysis with conformation, Finnigan 9001 GC with tandem PID/FID detector with purge and trap capabilities, and an Alpkem RFA 300 Autoanalyzer. Furthermore, EARDC has a Nikon Optiphot-2 microscope equipped with an Episcopic-Flouresence attachment and associated attachments for detecting Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control

EARDC’s commitment is to meet our client’s requirements by providing a high caliber of environmental and laboratory services. The goal of the EARDC laboratory is to generate an error free environment. The quality assurance and management system at EARDC stresses training and planning which yields increased personal performance, improved laboratory management and the prevention of errors. Our program relies on clearly defined objectives, well documented procedures, a comprehensive audit system and assistance of the EARDC management for its effectiveness. The EARDC laboratory is an active participant in the Environmental Protection Agency Water Pollution, Water Performance and Water Supply Evaluation Study. Quality assurance samples are regularly analyzed to maintain quality control and compare our laboratory with other laboratory facilities. The EARDC laboratory is engaged in a Quality Assurance monitoring program with Alamo Water and Wastewater Laboratory Analysts Association and Texas Water Utilities Association Laboratory Analyst Section of the Quality Assurance program. The EARDC Quality Assurance program ensures that data produced is scientifically sound, legally defensible, and of known documentable and verifiable quality.
